There are mountains of food which are sent daily to landfills because they are no longer "salable".
And then there are people who, through their care and concern for others pick this perfectly edible food up and delivers it to all kind of centres which care for homeless or food poverty stricken folks

FareShare and the "Feeding the 5,000" event on 16th December
On Wednesday 16th December, 5,000 free meals were served up on Trafalgar at the Feeding the 5000 event organised by Tristram Stuart, food campaigner and author of “Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal”, in partnership with other organisations and charities, including FareShare. The free lunch was made with food that would otherwise have gone to waste, like wonky carrots and other “outgraded” fruit and vegetables, which were made into delicious curry and served with surplus bread. Smoothies and cake were also on offer, as well as bags of fruit and vegetables for people to take home and cook themselves.
The event aim to highlight the ease of cutting the unimaginable levels of food waste in the UK and internationally. It provided FareShare with the opportunity to promote our message that ‘No Good Food Should Be Wasted’.
Tony Lowe, FareShare CEO, addressed the crowds as they tucked into their lunch and spoke passionately about the work we do supporting community organisations and other groups who cannot afford a healthy diet, with exactly the type of food that was being served up. In his speech, Tony challenged the industry to get on board and ensure that the surplus food in its supply chain goes to people first. In doing so, FareShare can access more food, reach more people and have a greater impact.
FareShare is proud to have supported this event, through the provision of logistical support (storing and transport of the produce used for the curry and the smoothies); and on the day itself, FareShare staff and volunteers, as well as staff from of our corporate supporters, Sodexo, were at the heart of the event, dishing out the hot curry to the many people turning up, and had a great time.
Seeing the queue of people waiting to be served the hot meal was fantastic: city workers on their lunch break, mothers with their children, tourists from across the world, students, older people and also homeless and other vulnerable people, the very individuals that FareShare aims to support every day of the year; all braving the cold weather together to hear about food waste and taste for themselves the amazing food that had been made with ingredients that were otherwise going to waste.
